Helm Environmental Solutions Introduces EPA Certified Tier 0+ Emissions Solution for EMD 645 Roots Blown Engine Family

San Francisco , California – April 22, 2010 – Helm Environmental Solutions, LLC a subsidiary of Helm Financial Corporation, announces 645EcoLogicTM, its new EPA Tier 0+ compliant remanufacturing kit for the EMD 645E Roots Blown engine family.  The 645EcoLogic kit, developed through the joint effort of Helm Environmental Solutions, LLC and OceanAir Environmental, LLC, is officially certified by the EPA to Tier 0+ Switch Locomotive Emission Limits.  This new kit represents a cost effective alternative to OEM offerings and gives the rail industry an alternative when selecting a 645E remanufacturing solution to meet Tier 0+ emissions standards.

“With the United States Environmental Protection Agency establishing timelines for compliance with emissions levels for locomotives, the industry is in need of solutions to meet these regulations.  The 645EcoLogic kit has been certified by the EPA to do just that”, said Brad Wind, Executive Vice President for Helm Financial Corporation.  The EPA rules, published in May, 2008, require locomotive owners and operators to comply with more stringent emissions standards on all remanufactured locomotives no later than January 1, 2010.  According to EPA emissions regulations expert Mahesh Talwar , President and CEO of OceanAir Environmental, LLC, “The new rules effectively require any engine overhaul that takes place on or after January 1, 2010 to comply with the EPA standards defined in the Federal Regulations Title 40 Part 1033”.

The 645EcoLogic kit enables reuse of the existing locomotive engine by remanufacturing it to comply with the EPA standards.  Remanufacturing with the 645EcoLogic kit provides locomotive owners and operators a cost effective solution to meet the regulations through its use of standard parts and components.  Additionally, the 645EcoLogic kit achieves the required emissions reductions with no fuel consumption penalty.

This new, patent pending kit for the 12 cylinder and 16 cylinder variants of the EMD 645E Roots Blown engine family delivers Tier0+, Switch Locomotive, compliance and does so while keeping initial installation and lifetime maintenance cycle costs at levels that are very competitive with other solutions in the market.

645EcoLogic kits are sold at two separate levels as outlined below.  This was done to enable customers to capitalize on any existing parts and components inventory they may have already invested in.  No need for a customer to “buy it twice”.

  • Level 1 – Mandatory Base Kit
    • Includes: LOC Power Assemblies, Fuel Temperature Control Valve and EPA Certificate
    • Additional Emissions Critical Components (required for compliance) may be supplied by the customer or purchased from HES
  • Level 2 - Kit Supplement (completes In-Frame Overhaul)
    • Includes:  All Emissions Critical Components, plus: Bearings, Seals and Gaskets, Top Deck Components, Injectors, Blowers, Pumps etc...
